Don't let the outside of is gem fool you: this is a wonderful hotel. The bed was extremely comfortable. I have a bad back but had no pain sleeping here. The decor was a surprise: simple, clean, modern. We didn't have time to try the pool, but the fact there is one was a plus. The staff was very helpful. The Pearl is close to many tourist attractions in the San Diego area and freeway access is convenient. We would definitely consider staying here again.
There is a bar on the premises and the nightly noise might be a problem for some people; e bar seems to attract a regular crowd of locals who all know each other. However, it wasn't overly loud and we were able to fall asleep without any problems. They closed at a reasonable hour, so it isn't anything that goes on into the wee hours of the morning.

The staff was awesome! They were always available to give us hints on places to go and see. Great atmosphere that even the locals we met love. Great location in between downtown area and the beaches/Sea World. Easy access to everywhere.
The a/c doesn't keep the room as cold as we would have liked.

actually a hotel attached to a fantastic nightclub. the club is far far more livelier than the hotel, and its fun being downstairs than in your room. it was a fine place to crash overnight after a party but would not really consider it for a serious family stay. rooms okay and non committal. fine if'd just like to spend the night
no elevators

Small and intimate, my friend and I each had our own rooms and our own "wing" of the hotel with a privacy barrier wall, steps from the sparkling heated saltwater pool. I bonded with my fish, Duke, in my spacious, modern Jewel room. The shower was strong and hot, and I enjoyed using the Spa toiletries. More than enough towels were provided. The bed was extremely comfortable and there were plenty of pillows. They made fresh coffee available in the morning. The Hotel is situated in a very nice part of town within walking distance of restaurants, bars, shopping, and the harbor. I felt that it was safe to park my car on the street. None of the unsavory elements of Downtown were evident.
Not really a hotel. More like a small motel with higher end design details. Would have liked a full length mirror and a small refrigerator in the room, and a self-serve ice machine (we had to get ice from the bar). The restaurant/bar doesn't open until 5pm. It would be nice to be able to have a continental breakfast in the morning and a cocktail and a nosh by the pool in the afternoon. We had been looking forward to trying the food and drink there, but went elsewhere due to the limited hours. No room service, which is a hotel thing. There was some street noise in the morning as people were going to work. I could hear the water when it was running in adjacent units. I would have liked more hangers in my closet. There were three.

We really enjoyed The Pearl, the pool entertained our 6 year old for hours, and the atmosphere in the evening was great when lots of locals came to eat at the bar. Great staff who were always helpful.
It would have been great to have a fridge and a jug.
